Sci-fi adventure based on the novel 'A Princess of Mars' by Edgar Rice Burroughs which follows American Civil War veteran John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) who finds himself on Mars. John wakes up on the barren planet, known to its occupants as Barsoom, and soon learns it is on the brink of war. He makes friends with Green Martian Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and falls for humanoid princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), a Red Martian he saves from a hostile Tharks tribe. With his strength and fighting skills enhanced because of the lower level of gravity, he leads the Martians in a war against their long-time enemy, the Zodanga state, and attempts to save them from extinction when their air supply shuts down. This record-breaking global blockbuster was the first new instalment in the Star Wars serial for 16 years, and recounts the events which occured a generation before the original Star Wars film: 'Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope' (1977). Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) have embarked upon a diplomatic mission to the planet Naboo, intending to open discussions between the planet's leaders and the heads of the Trade Federation. But when they are ambushed by Federation robots, they quickly realise that the negotiations are merely a decoy for a hostile invasion organised by the evil Sith master. Joining forces with Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) and the Naboo Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman), the Jedis manage to escape from Naboo and journey to the trade planet of Tatooine, where Qui-Gon meets a young slave boy named Anakin (Jake Lloyd), whom he identifies as a potentially powerful Jedi.
One of television's most critically acclaimed programmes, The Wire addresses the seedy side of Baltimore’s finest, looking into money, drugs, politics and murder. Told from the point of view of both the police and their targets, the series captures a universe of subterfuge and surveillance, where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn. A study on urban life in one of America’s toughest cities, each season of The Wire has focused on a different aspect of Baltimore, starting with the police force and the drug trade, then moving on to City Hall, the education system and concluding with the media.
Double bill of fantasy action films. '300' (2006), adapted from Frank Miller's comic book series, is a modern retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC, when the 100,000 strong invading Persian Army of King Xerxes was held back in a narrow mountain pass by 300 Spartans. King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) is given four days by Persia's King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) to lay down his arms and surrender. Rejecting the proposal, the battle ensues, and the Spartans are only defeated by the treachery of local shepherd Ephialtes (Andrew Tiernan), who shows the Persians a secret route, enabling them to outflank their opponents. In the second film, '300: Rise of an Empire' (2014), based on Miller's graphic novel 'Xerxes' and set before, during and after '300', Athenian General Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) leads the Greek Army in a war against the invasion of King Xerxes I, naval commander Artemisia (Eva Green) and their Persian forces. Themistocles allies with the Spartans but they are still outnumbered by Xerxes' men. Who will be victorious? The film was co-written by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad and also stars Lena Headey, Jack O'Connell and Hans Matheson.
